Paul Suggs, Artist

Paul Suggs came to Wellfleet more than 45 years ago after completing training as a fine artist/painter at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Inspired by the striking light and subtle landscape of the Lower Cape, Paul has continued to live and work in Wellfleet. Paul captures the dramatic play of light and shadow in the simple landscape of the Cape and the quiet coastal villages of Downeast Maine. His scenes are grounded with the use of architecture, a house, a boat or other object that brings the viewer to the spot and the season. He uses both early morning or late afternoon light and shadow that imbue his work with a sense of serenity. Recent work also returns the artist to an earlier interest in portraiture, again rendering a particular time, mood or character. Paul’s paintings are in private collections throughout the country and the nearby locale.

Paul is a well known local character who can be seen painting at his gallery as well as pushing his squirting clam through Wellfleet’s 4th of July parade to the delight of giggling kids young and old. He thrives on expression through art and laughter.

Joined by his wife Anne, Paul operates The Works Gallery at 75 Commercial St in Wellfleet. His work can be seen at this lovely light filled gallery that sits along Duck Creek.Designing and creating handmade goods is my work and passion. As a child, I loved putting a pencil to paper and building things with my hands. This love of creating stuck with through school where I studied graphic and product design.
