wellfleet & us

Our Story

Paul Suggs came to Wellfleet more than 45 years ago after completing training as a fine artist/painter at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Inspired by the striking light and subtle landscape of the Lower Cape, Paul has continued to live and work in Wellfleet. Paul captures the dramatic play of light and shadow in the simple landscape of the Cape and the quiet coastal villages of Downeast Maine. His scenes are grounded with the use of architecture, a house, a boat or other object that brings the viewer to the spot and the season. He uses both early morning or late afternoon light and shadow that imbue his work with a sense of serenity. Recent work also returns the artist to an earlier interest in portraiture, again rendering a particular time, mood or character. Paul’s paintings are in private collections throughout the country and the nearby locale.

Paul is a well known local character who can be seen painting at his gallery as well as pushing his squirting clam through Wellfleet’s 4th of July parade to the delight of giggling kids young and old. He thrives on expression through art and laughter. ( Photo)

Joined by his wife Anne, Paul operates The Works Gallery at 75 Commercial St in Wellfleet. His work can be seen at this lovely light filled gallery that sits along Duck Creek.

Anne Suggs has lived in Wellfleet for decades, raised her children here and now enjoys the proximity of grandchildren as well. After working for many years in the field of mental health, Anne has recently revisited an old interest and creates wheel thrown and hand built pottery at her studio in town. During Gallery season she can be found at her outdoor studio at The Works Gallery, happily spinning pots. Interested in basic form and function, and the movement created within the glazing & firing process, she explores clay as a medium for connection between hand, heart and mind. Her pieces can be seen and purchased at The Works Gallery and the occasional local craft fair.

Maeve Bradley has been a longtime educator of children and her work relates to simple joy of color and nature. In her own words:  “I think if I were cracked open like an egg all these colors would come spilling out. I paint the things I love in the way I want to see the world; open and full of possibility.”
